Black Moria/Unfavorable Matchup No.1

With the seventh wave environment, Blue-Black Sakazuki has been banned. Black-Moria is considered to have the potential to jump to the top of the environment from April onwards. In the Metaverse Lobby 24 held in March 2024, a commendable record of 60 wins and 20 losses (win rate: 75.0%) has been achieved as of March 30, 2024.

Black Moria can flexibly change the way he fights depending on the effect of the opponent’s leader card and his movements during the battle, but of course there are also disadvantages. In this article, will describe the reasons for the disadvantageous face-to-face and countermeasures.

[Main Achievements] Nothing significant… still in training.
Participated in the 2023 Area Qualifiers at the Osaka venue (0 wins, 3 losses) using Yellow Mom.
5 times ranked in higher-ranking winner of Flagship tournaments (highest position: 3rd place).
2 times won of Standard Battles.
Online record: 60 wins, 20 losses (win rate: 75.0%) as of March 30, 2024.
I’m still a beginner, so my goal for the first half of 2024 is to win at least one match in the Area Qualifiers. 🏆

Black-Yellow Ruffy

This matchup is so unfavorable that everyone would agree. Even with countermeasures, the disadvantage is only slightly mitigated, and the win rate is likely to remain below 50%.

Reasons for the disadvantage

I believe there are two reasons for this unfavorable matchup.
*Regarding Luffy, Ace, and Sabo, I will summarize them as 3brothers.

First, let’s talk about the power-up of the leader ability from the 2-cost 3brothers to the 5-cost 3brothers through evolution. I’ll spare you the details, but when the ‘evolution’ is successful, the leader power can be increased by 2000. In the case of Black-Yellow Luffy, you can intentionally and easily succeed in utilizing the leader effect, leader power will be 7000 or 9000 without Don card in a late-game. At that point, Black Moria’s main attacker the 5000 power line won’t be able to land any attacks. On the Black-Yellow Luffy side, with cards like ‘Receive Life’ or 1-cost Franpe, the hand size is generally abundant, so there’s not much you can do…

Second, point to consider in conjunction with the leader effect, K.O. resistance of the 5-cost Sabo (Black, 4th Pack) is the reason of disadvantage. Black Moria’s removal powerwill be ineffective…When this happens, it becomes difficult to K.O. opponent characters by attack, and the board state can become overwhelming.

Countermeasure

Despite the difficulty, there are ways to improve your odds. Here are three key points.

First, Avoid Attacking the Leader Early: When facing Black-Yellow Luffy, remember that their game starts when their life reaches 0. Delay attacking their leader as much as possible and focus on deploying your characters. An exception is when you can revive 4-cost Perona from the trash. Additionally, consider using 1-cost Garp to attack and then utilize the leader effect on the following turn.

Second, Leverage Hand Disruption (Handesu): In Black decks, hand disruption is crucial. One powerful option is the 8-cost Issho. As of March 2024, this card is increasingly included in deck builds. If you have 6 or more cards in hand, you can randomly discard 2 cards. Dropping an 8-cost Moria is a cause for celebration! Furthermore, having a 9000 attacker on the field is excellent, and it’s sure to shine during crucial moments. Don’t forget about 4-cost Perona as well. When your opponent’s hand is low, set up lethal plays and go for the win.

Third, if you win at rock-paper-scissors, choose to go second: From the perspective of Black Moria, going second allows you to quickly set up either 8-cost Moria or the 8-cost Issho. On turn 10, Black-Yellow Luffy can use 8-cost Moria to revive the 2-cost 3brothers and utilize the leader effect. Going second ensures that you can reach that timing as quickly as possible.
